Petrosani - Then and now ... (Part 1)

As some of you already know I was born in Jiu Valey - Romania and I lived for some time in Petrosani. But on this site there aren't many pictures from this town.
Although I do not live there any more I will try upload some pictures from this place. Hope you will enjoy them :)

Some info: The city of Petrosani was founded in the 17th century (around 1640). In 1720, an Austrian cartographer mentions that the entire Jiu Valley was intensly populated and settlements could be seen from one end to the other.
During the 1818 census, Petrosani had 233 inhabitants, while the entire Valley counted 2550. During this time, the main activity of the people was shepherding and no urban settlement had appeared yet.
Around 1840 coal surface mining began in Petroºani, Vulcan and Petrila.
The population encountered a massive increase only in the XXth century during the communist regime, as many workers were moved from Moldavia by the former Communist dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu.

Suprafata: 19.556 ha (teritoriu administrativ). Principalele localitati: Slatinioara, Pestera Bolii, Dâlja Mare, Dâlja Mica. Localizare: - Judetul: Hunedoara - Regiunea de dezvoltare: V VEST - Romania - Agentia de Dezvoltare: V VEST - Distanta fata de orasele mari. Municipiul Petrosani se afla situat la 100 km fata de resedinta de judet, municipiul Deva si la 370 km fata de capitala tarii, Bucuresti. - Altitudinea: 615 - 620 m. Forme de relief: Relieful în teritoriul administrativ este extrem de denivelat, specific zonei montane, cu defilee pe traseele celor doua Jiuri (Jiul de Est si Jiul de Vest). Masivele muntoase ce marginesc depresiunea sunt: Vâlcan la sud, Retezat la nord, Parâng la est si Godeanu la vest, altitudinea maxima din zona fiind vârful Parângul Mare de 2.507 m. Media si temperaturile extreme: Temperatura medie anuala nu depaseste 7,6°C; în lunile de vara fiind cuprinsa în intervalul 15,6 - 17,2°C (iunie - iulie). În medie, temperaturile maxime pe tot timpul anului ating 14°C, iar în luna august 25,1°C
